Save at a useful stopping point
When a conversation produces a decision, draft, or working solution, export it before moving on. Markdown works well for notes you will edit; PDF suits a version you want to send. Use a name such as website-navigation-2026-10-02.md so that both the topic and date are visible.
Review the project once a week
Keep exports in a folder for the project. During a weekly review, save conversations you missed and retain older versions when they document a decision you may need later. The schedule is your reminder; ChatShell does not perform scheduled backups automatically. For several conversations, ChatShell Pro offers batch export in HTML, Markdown, DOCX, and JSON. Select only the conversations you need. Workspace export is limited to conversations available to your account; it does not grant access to everyone’s private chats.
Check before you call it a backup
Compare the selected conversations with the exported results. Open a few files, including the longest conversation, and inspect the first and last messages. Review failed items and any missing-images.json report when present. Retry missing content before deleting or reorganizing the source.
Keep a second copy you can find
Copy the folder to another storage location you control. If you choose a shared or cloud folder, check who can access it. Keep original attachments separately when they are needed: a conversation export may not contain every uploaded file.
